FAQ

How soon after my surgery can I wear a breast form?
You should be fitted with an immediate post-surgery camisole for the first 4-6 weeks.  Six to eight weeks after surgery you can be fit with a permanent breast form.

How do I know which bra and breast form is right for me?
The nature of your body and surgery, together with the wide range of styles and sizes, mean a professional fitting is very important.  An experienced Certified Fitter will help choose the correct size and shape of breast from.  A breast form should be comfortable and match the remaining breast in terms of shape and size.

Why do I need a weighted breast form after surgery?
A properly fitted breast prosthesis helps replace the weight lost after surgery.  This replacement is not merely for cosmetic or psychological reasons but for physical reasons as well.  When a natural breast is removed the body is no longer in balance and will compensate with slight curving of the spin and “shoulder drop.”  Both conditions may lead to chronic lower back and neck pain.

Will wearing a breast form restrict my activities in any way?
Wearing a form shouldn’t restrict activities in any way.  Lightweight breast forms for leisure activities are available if a silicone form is unsuitable or too heavy.

Can I wear a silicone form while swimming?
Yes, silicone forms won’t normally be damaged by chlorine or salt water.  After use, gently wash and dry the breast form.

Can a breast form be worn with a regular bra (a bra without a pocket)?
Yes, but fashion bras have not been designed to meet the specific needs of most mastectomies.  It is important to be measured and fit by a professional fitter.  Mastectomy bras have been designed to hold the weighed form in place.

Does my insurance pay for any of my post mastectomy needs?
Yes.  Medicare and most other insurance’s pay for one breast prosthesis and two to four bras a year.  Check with your carrier to see what they provide.
